Private Lessons
Private lessons are
offered out of Kate's home studio located in the
Junction, Toronto. Lessons are purchased as a six
week term, at the end of which the student has
the option to continue with another six week
term. This feature ensures that the student can
make a realistic short-term commitment and revise
that commitment as their needs and schedule
change.
Lessons typically span two hours at a time, once a week, but the student may negotiate other arrangements if this is not ideal for their needs.
Lessons are custom-tailored and based on the student's needs. Students are encouraged to work on a project at the studio with Kate's supervision. A still life or a portrait is an example of the sort of recommended project. During the course of six lessons, the student will get hands-on experience with the full attention of the teacher to provide guidance through the hurdles of each step of the project. At the end of the six weeks, the student may want to commit to another term if more time is needed to complete the project.

Lessons are
calculated based on an hourly rate of $40.
Post-dated cheques will be accepted on the first
class to cover the six-week term. Any missed
classes can be made up during the term.
Throughout the
duration of the project, Kate will supplement
lessons with information on perspective, studio
safety, materials, colour theory, and basic
anatomy as theses topics become relevant to the
project. In the initial stages of any project
composition will be discussed. Students will also
be shown how to prepare a canvas and how to
varnish their finished painting.
Suggested Projects:
The creation of a
portrait painting is broken down into basic
steps. Life painting versus photo references is
discussed. The portrait is carried through from
preliminary drawings and colour sketches to the
finished piece.
Drawing skills and an understanding of colour is a necessary prerequisite. Still life painting is an ideal way to establish these skills.

One of Kate's
fortes, still life painting is a straightforward
way to learn painting techniques and hone drawing
skills. Great emphasis is placed on colour mixing
and the students will have help in setting up
their palettes and mixing their paints.
A simple arrangement with no more than two or three objects is recommended to ensure the student can complete the painting in reasonable time.
All skills learned from still life painting are applicable to other subject matter. All in all, still life painting is perhaps the best introduction to fine oil painting.
